Past
When the people of Vriden fled across the Darterre Ocean they expected to find a land empty of civilization. They thought any people who might populate Ainoya was little better than beast as that was the only explanation why over the course of time there were no stories of the people of Ainoya making contact with those of Vriden. Their time upon the Darterre brought to light another reason for this--the journey was a long and treacherous one. Many begun to wonder about the existence of this other land and thought they had doomed themselves to perish upon the open waters. This was not to be because they found themselves upon the shore of Ainoya after nearly a year upon the waters. At first, they found no sign of civilizations, but admittedly they were not actively looking for these things. Instead, they were more focus on settling the land they found themselves upon and rebuilding their civilization. The only thing was they couldn't agree on what shape this civilization should take. They were a collection of people from different cultural and each thought that the new society that arose within this new land should be a reflection of the one they had left. Then there were those that thought that this an opportunity to start something new--to create a new society that was built upon what they desired and not what they were taught.
The only thing they seemed to agree upon was there was strength in numbers and they should stick together. They decided to put what shape their new society would take upon the back burner as there was no guarantee that their people would survive upon this long enough to see a new society emerge. There were already talk about heading back and facing whatever horrors awaited them there. It was agreed that this wasn't an option. They believed that while the land they found themselves was untamed it was more suited to supported life than the one they left. They believed that within a few short years that Vriden would be nothing more than a vast wasteland and all those who had refused to embark upon the journey with them dead. While not going back was agreed upon exploring the new land they found themselves upon wasn't. Some said they should get settled first before they explored. Others said that exploring might help with their settlement efforts as they might stumble upon interesting finds that could help their people in the long run. It was eventually decided that both sides had merits, and that they had enough people for both approach.
It was during these explorations that they came upon the natives of Ainoya. At first, they did not encounter the people themselves but ruins that made it very clear whomever built them had a deep and rich society. Many argued that ruins only meant that a society had existed not that they still did. Either way, it was agreed that the news was exiting news and further exploration--including of these various ruins were greatly encouraged. Eventually they came upon the people themselves and it was during the exploration of one of the ruins---sacred grounds to those who had built it, and lack of a common language caused a situation that might have been settled without bloodshed to erupt into what many described as the first war the people of Vriden fought since coming to Ainoya. Through, it argued that while there were numbers of deaths on both sides to regard it as a war was laughable. It was a skirmish at best, but what was true this conflict lead to the mistrust and animosity that exist between both people despite the breaking of the language barrier. Eventually the two sides would fight what would be described as true wars. There are times when the animosity between both sides grew so great that one or both sides sought to completely eliminate the other, but despite their best efforts that never came to pass.
Those with strong Vrideni heritage claim that they are the victor of the ongoing conflict between the two as majority of the countries of Ainoya claim Vrideni roots, and it will be only a matter of time before they completely absorb the remaining Ainoyan. Those with strong Ainoyan roots claim while the Vrideni control more lands that they have a larger population. Within every nation with Vrideni roots a population of Ainoyan exist and every person residing upon Ainoya have Ainoyan blood---even if just a little. The reverse cannot said to be true. And they could not only call upon their fellow Ainoyan within Vrideni kingdoms to ensure their final victory but to use their arcane knowledge to call the bit of Ainoyan blood that reside within all those who live on Ainoya to render the Vrideni blood obsolete. The Vrideni do not deny the Ainoyan claim that they hold the higher population nor do they denounce the idea that majority---if not all of their numbers might hold a bit of native Ainoyan blood. They only deny the possibility of the Ainoyan using their magic erase any Vrideni within them. They knew a thing of two about magic and nothing within their tomes suggested that such a thing was possible. Of course, it was argued that a great deal of their magical knowledge was lost when they fled across the Darterre, and who knew what spell books might be collecting dust in some library back within Vriden that might hold such knowledge.
The Vrideni took this as threat from Ainoyan, and whether or not they could do as they claimed that the Vrideni aggressive assimilation of the Ainoyan people will not continued to be tolerate and measure will be taken to ensure that it stops. Those who might claim that these were empty threats were quickly dismissed. While the threats did not always play out exactly as the Ainoyan announced them they were rarely empty. Others suggested they should render the Ainoyan obsolete. The best way to stop a threat was to eliminate its source. The only problem with this plan was unlike the Ainoyan that the Vrideni had no arcane knowledge on how to eliminate an entire race of people and the only way to keep the Ainoyan from retaliating back was to ensure that none capable of doing any real damage were left standing. It was decided that the only course of action was to cease their attempts to aggressively assimilate the native of Ainoyan. They opened themselves to the possibility of negotiating peace between the two people, but they didn't believe they would achieve anything more than a tentative peace that would come crashing down if the wind happened to blow the wrong way.
More than that the Vrideni weren't sure if the Ainoyan would be opened to the idea of peace, but they had to try. Much to their surprise the Ainoyan were very opened to the idea, and for the first since the two encountered each other something of a mutual understanding formed between the two people. It was not perfect and the difference between their society made conflict between the two extremely likely, but every disagreement weren't automatically answered with violence. In fact, five of the six nations with strong Ainoyan heritage have formed alliance with various Vrideni nations that had lead to political marriages. The only nation that had not is Kvegrod. They see these political alliances as nothing more than the Vrideni's attempt to erase Ainoyan cultural, and they would not aid in this attempt by marrying off their sons and daughters for political gain. The other Ainoyan nations claimed that they were not erasing their Ainoyan heritage by allowing these political marriages to take place, bur rather ensuring that even more Ainoyan blood found it way into the Vrendi population, and that the Kvegrodian only had an issue with the arrangement because they were clinging to archaic beliefs that had no place within the current world.
This might have regraded as a grave insult for the other Ainoyan nations, but for Kvegrodian it was a source of the greatest pride. They believed themselves to be the sole guardian of the true way of the Ainyoan people. They believed that the Ainoyan people were more than their numbers but their cultural as well, and that if they forgot their customs--their language--that they were just as dead as if the last Ainoyan had been killed. In fact, they regarded their demise through the lose of their cultural worse than physical death as it meant the loss of their soul. It is for this reason that it might come to no surprise when it came to understanding what the Ainoyan cultural and language might have been like before the Vrendi found their way upon their land that they look towards the Kvegrodian. And while the Kvegrodian claimed that their refusal to join in political marriages between their people and the Vrideni was motivated by a desire not to aid the Vrendi in the erasing of Ainoyan their cultural forbade alliances from being formed in such a manner whether it was between an Vrendi nation of another Ainoyan one.
This was because they had a very strict rule about who was permitted to marry, and it had much to do with an individual's social standing. It might be thought that marriage between two different social classes were forbidden to prevent those of lower social standing from climbing the social ladder, but that wasn't the case as marrying into a higher social class did not grant those of a lower standing said status of the higher class. Yes, these marriages would open doors that might have otherwise remained shut, but that more to do with being the spouse of someone with a higher social standing than their own rise. The strict rule had more to do with the divine and worthiness. The higher you were on the social ladder the closer to the divine you were. In fact, those at the very top are regarded as deities themselves, and only those of equal standing could enter into a marriage pact with them and while outsiders might possess the same social status they were not of equal standing. It was because of this that incestuous marriage are the norm among Kvegrodian nobility--a fact that the other nations of Ainoya finds off putting. This is even more true among the royal family who had been marrying family to family as far back as their oldest records went.
It was this royal status that Trevyr was born into, but he was born the prince of Kvegrod not just a prince. He born to King Kasian III and his second wife Queen Nilsine. Trevyr was the only legitimate son born to the king and one of ten children born between the king and his second wife. Two of the daughters born to the king and his second wife would go on to become the king third and fourth wives. A fact no one within Kvegrod found surprising as the king was allowed to have multiple wives and his second had been his daughter born to his first. In fact, Nilsine was the only child born to King Kasian III first wife--Queen Eimear--, who died from complications from giving birth. While no one dare uttered the thought aloud within the King's presence many attributed Queen Eimear's untimely death to the king's impatience and that she might not have suffered such a fate if he had waited a few years before attempting to begot a child upon her. They feared Queen Nilsine would suffer a similar fate as he didn't learn anything from what happened to Queen Eimear. However, the gods decided that they would have many children together.
Trevyr's birth was a time of great celebration for the kingdom. While daughters were source of great joy--they couldn't ascend the throne. Through, Trevyr's was a joyous occasion it didn't silece King Kasian III concern about the line of succession. Any number of things could happen to the prince causing him to face the possibility that a direct line of succession ended with him. He wished to have at least one more legitimate son, and knowing Queen Nilsine was more than capable of giving him a son he increased his efforts with her and when she didn't provide him with what he sought he married two of their daughters in hopes they might succeed where is second wife failed. While King Kasian third and fourth wives have proven to be quite fertile, neither provided him with any sons that weren't stillborn. Growing up Trevyr quickly realized that his father bore no real love for him. Yes, his father did everything within his power to keep Trevyr safe from every possible threat---real or imagined--but he regarded Trevyr in the same manner that he did everyone--as a tool. He was just a more valuable one than the rest.
This did not mean he didn't feel the love of a parent. His mother loved him immensely and attempted to install within him a sense of humility and compassion that seemed to be lacking within the royalty of Kvegrod. He often wondered where his mother learned these lessons as they were not ones easily accessible within the castle. In fact, the castle only provided evidence to the contrary. He couldn't take one step without being regarded as a living god whose every action was the reason the world didn't crumble into nothing. He often found himself exploring the castle--even it most hidden spots---in an attempt to uncovering this mystery but than one day out of frustration over his mother reprimanding him for his mistreatment of a servant he blurted out the question that had been plaguing him for years. His mother told him that the answer was simple she walked among them. He didn't find this answer to be satisfactory as he doubted that their treatment would be any different outside the castle. His mother merely laughed before gesturing to her outfit and asking if he thought she went out dressed like this. He immediately understood what his mother meant.
Kvegrod cultural required members of the royal family to wear masks within the presence of those of lower status as they were not worthy of looking upon the divine. He knew what his mother had done was more than scandalous and could lead to the execution of those who happened to see her face without the mask as such an act is considered high treason--even if those who had viewed her face had not been aware they were committing a crime. Over the course of Kvegrodian history exceptions had been made, but despite his concern for the possible consequences of his mother's actions he knew that she was correct when she said without his mask no one would recognize who he was and he immediately decided wanted to see how that felt. He expressed this desire with his mother, who agreed to take him on a few of her outings. He found himself falling in love with his people. He got to see a side of them that he wouldn't have if he had been wearing his mask.
Eventually he decided that his mother didn't take him out often as often as he liked and begun to sneak out on his own. His mother attempted to discourage him from doing such a thing. It was dangerous enough with her, but she knew what to look for and how to avoid any potential threats. She loathed to think of him getting hurt from something she could have easily protect him from. Her concerns weren't unfounded as he quickly found himself within a dangerous situation, but he proved himself more than capable of handling it. Truth be told he found himself enjoying the rush that came with finding himself in such a situation and whenever he went out he attempted to place himself in more danger---much to his mother' dismay. She tried to convince him not to take such risk. He was the prince of Kvegrod his death would wound the people immensely, and when that failed she attempted to threaten to tell his father what he was doing. He called her bluff, telling her that she had too much compassion to tie another's noose in an attempt to convince anyone to comply to her will. She conceded to this point and then asked if he would undergo training that would only increase his success in overcoming these dangerous situation that he was so keen to jump into.
He agreed to this and found himself receiving martial art training that he would never have relieved as a prince of the realm. As a prince his combat training focus mostly on the arcane, but there were limitations to magic and he might find his magic failing to help him escape from a dangerous situation. He didn't know if he agreed with this assessment, but he decided that learning more forms combative skills didn't hurt. It didn't take anyone long to realize he had quite a knack for the fighting arts. His trainer even went as far as to call him a prodigy for not only how quickly he picked up a skill but how fast he could adapt his previous knowledge of both the arcane and the physical into unique and interesting ways. His trainer became quite fond of Trevyr and truth be told he found the feelings mutual. At first, he wondered if this what a father and son's relationship was suppose to be like, but those thoughts were quickly dismissed when their relationship took a different course. He was, at first, disgusted by what happened. It wasn't that he never been intimate with another. He had lovers. In fact, he was married. When he had came of age his father had married him to one of his sister and encouraged them to do the deed often in an attempt to secure the line of succession in that manner.
It was just intimacy between the same gender was abhorrent. It was an affront to the laws of the universe. He--like any Kvegrodian---was raised to believe that the act of sex was only used to beget more children and while one could find pleasure in the act to engage in any form of intercourse that didn't have the potential of producing children were unacceptable. While at this point, he and his wife didn't have any children he was certain that he had managed to get a few of the women he slept with pregnant. Worse he had enjoyed the act, and with that silent admission he fled from his trainer. He decided to put distance between them until he managed to smother any unnatural feelings for the other man, but he quickly realized that avoiding the other was easier said than done. Even not sneaking out didn't provide him aid in this manner as he discovered that he was his father's general when his father decided that Trevyr needed to take a more active role within the military aspect of ruling the kingdom. Once again he found himself in close proximity of the man and while he did not surrender to his desire while wearing his mask that didn't mean he didn't seek him out and resume their relationship because that was exactly what he did. He had thought he would be angry with him, but the general was very understanding. He made it clear he had the same reaction with his first homosexual relationship and that he had no doubt Trevyr would work through his feelings and come back to him.
One day when returned to retire to his chambers for the night he found the general's daugter waiting for him. He thought the general had put her there in one of his attempts to convince them to sleep together. This was another reason that Trevyr realized the general had no knowledge of his true identity because when the idea of anyone sleeping with Trevyr sent him into a fit of rage the thought of him actively pushing his own daughter as a potential lover was impossible to imagine. He told her that while it was nice to see her that his decision had not changed. While he knew the deed could be done without taking off his mask he made a personal decision never to sleep with someone while masked, and he knew that if he revealed his face to her that she would know the truth and took care to keep people from connecting those dots. He moved to usher her from his chamber when she stopped him in his track by telling him that wasn't what she was here for. It wasn't the idea that she rebutted his claim that she was only here on her father's orders, but the fact she called him by a nickname she only ever called Trevyr's her father's lover. She knew. She had connected the dots.
He couldn't stop the question from bursting out of his lips, and she laughed at him, telling him that of course she knew. She had known since her father introduced them at the Solstice Ball three years ago. How could she not recognize his voice? Even if she forgot everything else she would recall what his voice sounded like. She then went on to tell him that her father planned on usurping the throne and that Trevyr was in danger because her father had made it perfectly clear that he had plans for him. The general planned on using him to get him. She didn't know exactly how it worked. She just knew that it was an ancient forbidden magic and the few sources she found that talked about what might happened if one tried to use the same person as the sacrifice as the one to be summoned--for a lack of a better way of describing it---was not good to say the least. There was a possibility that he might remove his mask before preforming the ritual and upon seeing he already possessed what he desired would realize there was no need for it, but Trevyr wouldn't want that outcome anymore than the other. She had not thought his obsession ran this deep. If she had thought her father capable of love than she might have believed he held such affection for Trevyr.
Immediately, his thought went towards his family and his desire to warn them, but then she revealed to him that it was too late for that because she had been misleading when she told him that her father planned usurping the throne---he was doing it at this very moment and his family were either dead or being killed at this very moment. He needed to leave, flee Kvegrod, flee Ainoya, no find a way to flee the planet all together. Trevyr refused. He knew enough about the general to know what type of king he would be, and he would not run away to safety while his people were subjugated to that horror. She knew right away that it was pointless to try to convince him to change his mind. She merely muttered stubborn male before telling him that he would need to convince the general that the prince was dead. Even if he didn't need to use the prince for the ritual he would still feel the need to kill him. The Kvegrodian people would never submit if they believed a member of the royal family was alive---especially not the prince whom was beloved by the kingdom. She leaned over and whispered more people know what I know then you realize. He didn't need her to explain further. He knew exactly what she meant. Just as he knew she was right when she said the prince needed to die. He just wasn't sure how they would pull off such a deed.
That was when a servant spoke up. He apologized for his intrusion, but he suggested they made the general believe he was the prince. Even if the general had seen his face he would not recognize it as he was regarded as nothing of value within the general eyes. They would just need to change clothing and kill the servant while he was dressed as the prince. This was not something he wanted to do, but before he could protest against this plan the servant told him that of all the royals and nobility that Trevyr was one of the few that he would willing die for. Trevyr never regarded him like the other of his status did. He actually saw him when he looked at him. Upon hearing the servant pleas, Trevyr reluctantly agreed. A large part had to do with the fact he knew that they didn't have time to come up with another plan. A truth that became abundantly clear when the general came bursting into the room moments after they switch clothes and just as Trevyr was delivering the killing blow. The general stood there for a few brief moments in what Trevyr could only describe as disbelief before bursting out laughing and attempting to seize Trevyr. However, the general daughter stepped between them and told Trevyr to run. He was talented but he was no match for her father. He didn't know what her father was, and if he didn't leave now he would never gather the strength to defeat him.
The general snarled at his daughter to stand aside, but she refused and the two fought. Trevyr did not stay and watch the ensuing battle. He didn't know if he would see the general's daughter again, but he knew she was right. He had to get out of there. He just didn't know where he should go next. The only thing he knew was he couldn't leave the country. He needed to stay and one day liberate his people from the nightmare that he was sure to follow. The answer revealed itself soon enough as someone ushered him into a building where a group of others were gathered. They revealed they were there to help Trevyr endeavor of returning a Nyvorlas to the throne. He knew what they meant--put him on the throne. A thought that weighed heavily upon him. He had always been prepared to become king, but he never thought his entire family would be slaughtered in order for him to ascend. However, full weight of their death did not sink in until he saw their heads on pike's along the road leading to the castle. He almost found himself lost to his rage, but managed to stop himself from giving into his anger. He knew all would be lost if he did.
A few days after this the general daughter revealed herself to be injured but very much alive. She joked that if they had hoped to use her as an inside source that wasn't an option as her father made it clear she was no longer to be trusted. Trevyr told her that was okay. She knew her father well enough to provide valuable insight and what about her father she couldn't predict from previous knowledge they would manage to get elsewhere. Yes, it might dampen their efforts but it would not stop them. As long as they drew breathe. They would oppose him and that was exactly what they did much to the general's frustration. He has tried countless times over the last two years since he usurped the throne to put an end to rebels, but to no avail. During this time, the general proved to be as much of a tyrant as Trevyr believed. Through, he keeps much to Kvegrodian custom---especially when it comes to members of the royal family wearing a mask. Trevyr and he had spoken a number of times throughout the years. Each time the general demands that Trevyr return to his proper place and a few times he told Trevyr that he was a tease who he was going to enjoy punishing.
There are those--like the general's daughter--who believe that he is playing an extremely dangerous game by constantly revealing himself to the general, but Trevyr says that it keeps the general's focus upon him rather than tormenting his people, and he had managed to gather a few vital intel by playing this dangerous game---intel that not only helped them immensely in their efforts to oppose him but kept him from crushing their rebellion entirely. The general's daughter still doesn't believe he should continue to risk it. He only manages not to fall into the general's hand because of luck, but eventually that would run out and everything they have fought for the last two years would be lost.
